SATURDAY, Sept 26 at Herstreet:

8:30 – 10:30 am: Traditional Led Primary Series, finishing with Breathwork and Guided Deep Relaxation

12:00 – 12:30pm: Invocation and Peace Chants

12:30 – 14:00 pm: Tristhana, Vinyasa & Shraddha–Elements of a deep, enduring practice followed by Q&A

This workshop explores the foundational principles of Tristhana, Vinyasa, and Shraddha as the essential elements of a practice that is both transformative and sustainable. We will examine how breath, posture, and gaze unite within the precision and rhythm of vinyasa to cultivate presence, steadiness, and inner clarity. Alongside these technical aspects, we will reflect on shraddha which is the quality of sincere faith, dedication, and heartfelt commitment that supports consistent practice through all of life’s seasons. Suitable for practitioners of all levels, this workshop offers practical tools and philosophical insights to deepen your connection to the Ashtanga tradition and foster a resilient, lifelong relationship with your practice.

SUNDAY, Sept 27 at Herstreet:

10:00 am – 12 pm: The Four Purification Exercises, followed by Ashtanga Primary Series “As it Was”

Four Purification Exercises: Yoga is aimed at purifiying the channels (nadis) of the body. While the full exercises of purification can be quite strenuous (shat karmas), there is a simpler system that can be practiced by anyone. These four techniques from the Baba Hari Das tradition are not difficult to learn, but have a profound effect on the nervous system. We will learn and practice the 4 techniques so that you take home a daily practice.

Ashtanga Primary Series “As it Was”: This practice is a version of the Primary Series as it was originally taught to Nancy GIlgoff in 1973. It is an important historical record for understanding how Pattabhi Jois’s teaching evolved over time. It demonstrates that many practices now considered “traditional” were introduced or standardized later. Some of the main differences include fewer Sun Salutations, fewer jump backs, a shorter standing sequence, and the fairly immediate inclusion of Intermediate Series as a complement to the Primary Series.

12:00 – 2:00 pm Break or Communal Brunch (not included in class fee)

14:00 – 16:00pm: Intro to Ayurveda & Dinacharya (Daily Routines)

Ayurveda is the oldest system of folk medicine known to mankind. With origins in India, and a sister science to Yoga, Ayurveda seeks to optimize the health of the body, mind and spirit by creating a balanced relationship to nature and the elements. In our ever-busy and increasingly stressful world, this class will encourage you to reconnect with our natural environment and rhythms and will provide you with an opportunity to slow down and check in with yourself. You will come away with a basic understanding of our inherent relationship to universal energies and some practical daily routine strategies to antidote the effects of imbalance.

“Rogastu dosha vaishamyam dosha saamyam arogata.” When the dosha are in a balanced state, they provide health; the same in an imbalanced state cause disease. (C.S.)

To keep the tridosha in a state of equilibrium, Ayurveda prescribes for each individual a specific daily routine. Dinacharya means daily routine (dina = day and acharya = to follow). In following the natural rhythms of the day, we can align our beings with the cycles of the sun, moon and our natural environment. Scientists are only now beginning to understand exactly how important it is for the body to stay in rhythm with nature. In our modern world, this is becoming a challenge, as more and more folks are dissociated from the natural environment. Ayurveda has touted the importance of a connection with nature for thousands of years.
